Buying a stove

It's best to have a clear idea of what you want a stove for. For secondary heating (providing extra heat in a room where an there is already a heating system) the look of the stove can be as important as its performance. You may want it for primary heating in a small house or cottage, or maybe fitting a back boiler to provide central heating and hot running water.

Whatever you want your stove for it is best to speak to us. We can give you expert advice on choosing the right stove for your needs.

Multi-fuel or Wood Burning?

A multi fuel stove has a grate which means you can burn coal or wood. A dedicated wood burning stove will generally not have a grate because wood burns best on a bed of ash. A dedicated wood burner will generally burn wood more efficiently than a multi fuel stove although this is not always true.

Remember that coal is a fossil fuel - burning coal results in the release of a lot of CO² which drives climate change - the responsible choice if practical would be to choose a dedicated wood burner so you are not tempted to burn coal. There are alternative solid fuels to coal, and HETAS approved fuels are suitable for use in smoke controlled areas and with a range of appliances. Just ask if you are not sure which fuel to use.

Heat Rating

All stoves are rated by their heat output range, this is dependant on the size of the stove and varies depending on the type of fuel burnt and the setting on the stove itself. Generally the hotter the stove burns (more heat into the room) the shorter the fuels lasts (you have to replace the burnt logs). All stoves have controllable vents that allow you to set how hot the burn is, this allows you to slow the burn giving off a gentle heat all night.

Large stoves generally produce more heat simply because they can burn more fuel at any one time, but obviously this means that you get through fuel faster. Speak to us and we can guide you picking the ideal stove, to provide the perfect level of heat for your home.
